In Latin America and the Caribbean, the most violent region in the world, violence is one of the most urgent health needs to be addressed. The leading causes of death among people between the ages of 10-29 include homicide, suicide and motor vehicle crashes. With 29% of all homicides occurring in this age group, adolescents and young adults are disproportionately affected by inter-personal violence, which is oftentimes made worse when alcohol is involved. Unfortunately, many government initiatives to combat youth violence often fail.

To help resolve this matter, the Project for Newborn, Child and Youth Health at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), along with the German Technical Cooperation (gtz), has published “Policies for the Reduction of Alcohol-Related Violence that Affects Young People: An Environmental Approach.”

Who this book is intended for: Anyone who is interested in or works with policies or strategies that deal with alcohol-related violence. This book could be a helpful advocacy tool for promoting effective policy that discourages unsafe alcohol consumption and violence.

What it aims to do: Provide a comprehensive summary of strategies and policies found in an environmental approach on alcohol-related violence in the Region and, based on these, make recommendations on next steps.

How it works: The book is divided into three sections. The first examines youth alcohol consumption and the role of alcohol in violence. The second summarizes environmental prevention strategies and policies that have been found to reduce alcohol-related violence. The third makes recommendations for next steps and identifies areas in need of further research. Additionally, two case studies from Brazil and Puerto Rico are included as appendices. As a flipbook, the reader can choose to read the document in English or Spanish.
