Description

Order code: SP 502

This book explores the present status of the campaign against endemic goiter, cretinism, and their main etiologic factor, iodine deficiency.

The first part of this work describes the pathophysiology of goiter and cretinism, and discusses advances in thyroid physiology, effects of iodine distribution and deficiency, and factors other than iodine deficiency that can cause goiter. Subsequent chapters review special problems associated with goiter and cretinism, such as intellectual and physical disabilities and related diseases, and evaluate economic consequences of the disease. The third section of the book addresses worldwide policies on goiter control, and examines laboratory evaluation and iodization of salt and oil as methods of correcting iodine deficiency. The book concludes with a breakdown of distribution of goiter and cretinism by geographical area along with analyses of the situation in several countries. It reviews research developments and available methods of control and treatment, prevalent documents, and offers recommendations for future approaches to the problem. Public health planners, policy makers, and physicians will benefit from this analysis of the goiter and cretinism problem in the Americas, and from the strategies outlined for its control and eradication.
