This publication is the fourth in a series of PAHO manuals on disaster preparedness and is designed to serve as a guide for those responsible for planning and implementing environmental hygiene measures after disasters. It discusses the effects of disasters on environmental health, the correction of environmental health conditions that cause disasters, and the order of priority in which they should be dealt with during the emergency. Information on rehabilitation and restoration of basic services is also included. In addition to providing a bibliography, the annexes deal with the preparation of emergency operations plans; guidelines for the use of disinfectant tablets, powders, and liquids; and environmental health measures, including evacuation and assistance operations.
