The primary aim of the first Polio Eradication Field Guide, published in 1987 and revised in 1988, was to provide epidemiologists, medical officers, and other health personnel at the national, state, and local levels with a step-by-step guide for setting up and carrying out activities to eradicate polio.

The present guide builds on the first by including the knowledge acquired over the past six years. It should be used by any country working toward eradication of polio. The Field Guide discusses all the components of the eradication strategy, from intensifying immunization and improving specimen collection for cases and contacts, to monitoring coverage levels, evaluating surveillance systems, developing specially targeted vaccination campaigns, and more. The measures described can be adapted according to local conditions and the prototype forms included in the appendices may be photocopied and modified to meet particular needs. This is an excellent resource for public health officers in any country striving for eradication.
