Description

Order code: TP 24

Since gathering and consolidating information on the elderly is critical for their inclusion in existing health programs, PAHO encouraged countries to conduct epidemiological studies on their populations aged 60 and older. These household surveys were designed to describe the needs of older persons and to determine how well needs were being met. By investigating different areas--health, physical functioning, socioeconomic factors, social relationships, and formal and informal health services use--these studies created useful profiles of the elderly in several countries, in this case, in Guyana. The collected data, by assessing the extent of the elderly's health problems, can be used to evaluate current national policies and programs and to plan and implement future comprehensive care that encourages self-care, that ensures continuity and quality, which in turn, promotes participation in and by the community.
