Although community water fluoridation is an effective public health measure for the prevention of dental caries, many areas of the Region lack a well developed centralized public water supply. Salt fluoridation, however, is a universal vehicle that is readily utilized throughout the Americas, irrespective of location and access to water supplies.

PAHO has been collaborating with the countries of the Region and agencies, such as the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, in salt fluoridation research and development projects. This publication brings together information regarding the dental situation and the findings related to those projects as presented at the International Conference on Fluorides held in Vienna, Austria, in 1982 and the First International Symposium on Salt Fluoridation held in Medellín, Colombia, in 1977. It also includes documents presented at the Vienna conference and conclusions and recommendations of that conference.
