This book evolved in response to the need to understand the interrelationship between health and disease and to identify the multiple causes of both. It compares the factors involved in different countries of the Americas and in diverse environments--rural and urban--and their effect on morbidity, mortality, and well-being. It presents various analyses of information acquired during household surveys based on a probability sample as well as a comparison of living children in the sample with investigated deaths with respect to selected environmental and other factors that influence the risk of death.

The surveys themselves constitute one of the principal parts of the Inter-American Investigation of Mortality in Childhood, which was carried out in 15 locations (13 in Latin America, one in the U.S.A., and one in Canada) over a two-year period by Ruth R. Puffer and Carlos V. Serrano.
